Do you need a Talent Manager or Agent?

What is a talent manager?

A talent manager is an agent or an entertainment lawyer that will help you find work: book auditions for you; negotiate a contract and give you advice regarding your acting career.

Talent managers don’t need to be affiliated to the actors unions; consequently an unethical manager may do you more harm than good.

If you do want a manager choose one that belongs to a reputable professional organization; e.g. The Talent Managers Association, http://www.talentmanagers.org/

Managers usually receive 5 - 20% commission on work they get for you.

Beginner actors may not need a talent manager. Once you are established in your film career and you can’t handle your affairs, you may need a talent manager or an agent.  Some actors have an agent and a manager.

Do note that most of the bigger production houses only work through agents.  If you are serious about an acting career in Hollywood it may be better to find an agent to help you compete with the thousands of hopefuls.  I recommend The Hollywood Representation Directory, 35th Edition, 2008 to help you find an agent or casting director in Hollywood. This directory is the most complete, reliable, and comprehensive reference book on Hollywood  talent and literary agents, managers, entertainment attorneys, publicity companies - all with complete contact information.
